Nationals option LHP King to Triple-A (AP)
Veteran left-handed reliever Ray King was contemplating retirement Thursday, when he was optioned to Triple-A Columbus by the Washington Nationals before their game against the New York Mets. The Nationals made the move, which King called “very surprising,” so they could select left-hander Mike O’Connor’s contract from Columbus.

Santana leads Mets to win over Nationals (AP)
Johan Santana added a dangerous bat to his dominant repertoire, and Mets manager Willie Randolph had some fun critiquing his prized pitcher. Santana doubled twice and pitched seven solid innings to lead the Mets to a 7-2 win over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night. “He should have had the cycle,” Randolph said.

Smoltz reaches 3,000 strikeouts in loss to Nationals (AP)
John Smoltz, sitting on 2,999 strikeouts, had two strikes on Felipe Lopez. With the home crowd cheering, Smoltz went with the pitch he still credits for helping win the ‘96 NL Cy Young Award: the split-finger fastball. Lopez whiffed, and Smoltz became the 16th pitcher in major league history to reach the 3,000-strikeout plateau.
