GW, St. Joseph’s to play 1st game at Nationals Park (AP)

There will be no home runs from Ryan Zimmerman in the first game at the Washington Nationals new ballpark. The Nationals announced Friday that George Washington will play St. Joseph’s on March 22 in the first sporting event at their 41,000-seat stadium. The Atlantic 10 Conference game will serve as a test run for the […]

De Aza leads Marlins to 4-1 victory over Nationals (AP)

Alejandro De Aza is off to another spectacular spring start for the Florida Marlins. This year the team hopes it will get to see how good he is in the regular season, too. De Aza led off the game with a homer and drove in two runs as a Florida Marlins split squad beat the […]

Jason Bergmann, Nationals beat Georgetown 15-0 in exhibition play (AP)

Playing against college competition did not alter the approach of Jason Bergmann, who looked comfortable and in command Thursday against Georgetown. The 6-foot-4 right-hander pitched two hitless innings and the Washington Nationals dominated in a 15-0 exhibition game rout. Bergmann struck out three and walked one, and didn’t allow a batter beyond first base.

1B Nick Johnson avoids another collision, Nationals and Marlins tie 3-3 (AP)

Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson had a frightening flashback Wednesday night in his first game since breaking his leg 17 months ago. In the second inning of Washington’s 3-3 tie with Florida, Robert Andino lofted a high foul pop down the right-field line. Taking off in pursuit were Johnson, second baseman Felipe Lopez and right […]

Mariners’ McLaren is a confidant for Boone’s alcohol problems (AP)

Bret Boone was a special player for the Mariners. A rollicking infielder who supplied much of the power, defense and fun to Seattle’s American League-record 116 wins in 2001. What wasn’t fun about 37 home runs and a league-best 147 RBIs? Boone was an All-Star who probably would have been an MVP if teammate Ichiro […]

Nationals’ Johnson excited about return from leg injury (AP)

Nick Johnson is ready to return, once again. More than 17 months after a collision with teammate Austin Kearns left Johnson with a broken right leg, Washington’s oft-injured first baseman is looking forward to returning Wednesday when the Nationals open their exhibition season against Florida. “It’s been a long time,” Johnson said.

Nationals taking no chances with Dukes (Yahoo! Sports)

The Washington Nationals are taking no chances with troubled Elijah Dukes, who came over from Tampa Bay over…

Nats’ Bowden on Zimmerman: ‘We’re not going to change the pay scale of Major League Baseball’ (AP)

In rare public comments on contract talks, Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden set the parameters for negotiations with third baseman Ryan Zimmerman by mentioning four young players of similar stature who signed long-term deals over the past two years. “If Ryan is willing to sign a contract that is similar to what all the […]

‘We’ve made big progress’: Nationals figure they’ll score more (AP)

Wily Mo Pena smacked a ball so far it not only cleared the left-field fence at the practice field, it landed on the tin roof over batting cages about 30 feet further away. Clank! Next up was Elijah Dukes. Nearly the same landing spot. Clank! “Oh, mercy!” Jim Bowden yelped. Next up was Lastings Milledge. […]

Nationals RHP Luis Ayala can laugh about hunting accident now (AP)

Luis Ayala tried to keep a straight face as he reached into his locker for a hat as bright a neon orange as there is, suitable for making one clearly visible while hunting. Ayala perched the cap on his head and said, “I know what you want to talk to me about.” The Washington Nationals […]
